19. Door Gods, Grotesques and Gargoyles

15th Sept

A door god is a Chinese decoration placed on each side of an entry to a temple, home, business, etc., believed to keep evil spirits from entering.

Grotesque figures and gargoyles related to the middle ages and Gothic churches are used in the plumbing system as drain spouts, and probably have a message for warding off evil - a "kiss my ass" keep away deterrent to demons, or a juxtaposition or balance of ugliness against the beauty inside the building
